The game does a very good job of easing you into the concepts involved, including what to do if you stall and the simple lock-on system for missiles. It’s really not that difficult though, especially if you’re used to something like Star Wars: Battlefront II, and we’d advise just starting off on expert even if you’re a flight novice. Normal simplifies the controls so that left is left and right is right but expert controls handle more like a real aircraft and force you to pitch and roll too. There’s a LOT more to it than that, which we won’t spoil here, but much revolves around the fact that this isn’t the real world and while the game features lots of real, licensed planes there’s also fictional ones too and a modest amount of near future sci-fi weaponry that means you’re never quite sure what to expect in any given mission.Īt the start at least you’re flying around in familiar American jet fighters like the F-16 and F-14, with the game offering either a ‘normal’ or ‘expert’ control system when you start. The short version of the story is that Erusea has surprised Osean with a Pearl Harbor style attack using unmanned drones, while much of the narrative focuses on an aircraft enthusiast caught up in the struggle and forced to help out. But while the plot is frequently confusing, and ultimately very silly, it’s told with some impressively cinematic cut scenes and a lot of earnest effort. “It’s a challenge to master once you’re used to the basic controls and can handle an aircraft, but when you do use it, it might just get you a target in a dogfight.”Īce Combat 7: Skies Unknown is available now for PS4 and Xbox One.After the abortive attempt to reboot the series with a real-world setting, in 2011’s fun but shallow Assault Horizon, Ace Combat 7 returns to the fictional world of the Osean Federation and the Kingdom of Erusea, whose anime-influenced melodramatics account for a lot of the game’s popularity in Japan. “The post stall manoeuvre will bring a sense of adventure to all pilots,” he says. Although featured before, this is the first time players will have full control. Kono-san adds that the post stall manoeuvre will allow players, when being targeted by an enemy on the tail, to stall and drop in behind and destroy it. “There is a scene where the Stealth Pod opens and many missiles are launched at once it looks very dramatic.” “I don’t want to mention the weapons that I think are really cool because I don’t want to ruin the surprise for fans, but if you’re talking just visual, the ‘Stealth Pod’ looks great. Is there a weapon that stands out in Kono-san’s mind? “As I said previously, the game is created for the players, so we won’t adopt something if those players cannot easily understand it.” “On the other hand, if the weapon actually exists, if it’s hard to imagine where and how to use it, we won’t bother. Weapon systems are based on both existing and projected, near-future weapons.“We design with elements that people will believe are true and can exist,” says Kono-san. “However, when we create fictional aircraft, we ensure that they’re designed for maximum fan enjoyment and excitement.” “We had to change the design of a HUD in this game due to the actual aircraft receiving a modification the designers always struggle with how to depict real aircraft. Kono-san describes the aircraft design process: “It normally starts by gathering information and this is continuously updated. Players can expect a new array of aircraft and weapons to fight with. Strangereal is once again the setting for Skies Unknown‘s single-player, and centres around a conflict between the Osean Federation and the Kingdom of Erusea, that plays out in 2019. We wouldn’t be able to accomplish anything without their support.” We have always tried hard to make games where satisfying our fans is the goal. “The long history of the franchise is proof that many fans have supported. Kono-san has been working on the series since Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies (2001). However through thick and thin, the Ace Combat franchise has stayed the distance, with the latest in the series, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, in stores now.Īce Combat hasn’t been without turbulence over the years, but a higher than average safety record has ensured it has accrued a loyal – and indeed vocal – community. On the current generation of consoles choices are limited for fans of flying in games, and grabbing an airborne fix usually comes as a side diversion in the open worlds of a Far Cry or GTA V. Producer Kazutoki Kono takes up the story. Perennial flight-shooter Ace Combat returns in Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown.
